Carbon Footprint & Sustainability Commitment

My Driving Emissions

I typically drive around 14,000 miles per year for performances across the UK.

Based on average vehicle emissions:

  • 0.40 kg CO₂ per mile (≈ 404 grams)

This results in:

  • 14,000 miles × 0.40 kg = 5,600 kg of CO₂ per year

  • 👉 Approximately 5.6 metric tons of CO₂ annually from driving alone

What this means in real-world terms:

  • Roughly the same emissions as the electricity use of an average home for six months

  • Equivalent to burning around 2,500 litres (660 gallons) of petrol

My Train Travel Emissions

Where possible, I also travel by train.

  • Average rail emissions: ~0.04 kg CO₂ per passenger mile
    (around 10× lower than driving)

Typical annual train travel:

  • 24 travel days per year

  • ~100 miles per day

This equates to:

  • 2,400 miles per year

  • ~50–200 kg of CO₂ annually

Total Estimated Annual Travel Emissions

SourceCO₂ per yearDriving~5,600 kgTrain~50–200 kg

🎯 Total: ~5.7–5.8 metric tons of CO₂ per year

This means 95–97% of my travel emissions come from driving, with train travel contributing a very small fraction by comparison.

My Sustainability Goal (2026–2028)

My aim is to reduce car travel by 4,000 miles by 2028 and take the train wherever practical.

What that reduction achieves

Using the same emissions average:

  • 4,000 miles × 0.40 kg = 1,600 kg of CO₂ saved

  • 👉 1.6 metric tons of CO₂ reduced

In everyday terms, that’s equivalent to:

  • 🌳 The carbon absorbed by 25–30 tree seedlings grown for 10 years

  • ⛽ Around 180 gallons of petrol not burned

  • 🚗 Roughly three months of average car driving

  • 🏠 Similar to two months of home electricity use

Impact on My Overall Footprint

  • Before: 14,000 miles = 5.6 tons CO₂

  • After: 10,000 miles = 4.0 tons CO₂

🎯 That’s a 29% reduction in car-related emissions—a significant cut achieved through one practical lifestyle change.
